Is it haram to wear suede leather as the animal may not be halal slaughtered ?

Answer

Suede leather is made from animal hide and normally sold only after tanning (Dibagha) has occurred. This tanning process makes the hide pure (Tahir) by removing the blood and other impurities from the hide, even if the animal was not slaughtered in accordance to Islamic law. Thus such suede products may be worn.

However, it should be clear that this ruling of tanning does not apply to those products which are derived from pig skin, as the pig is regarded as impure in its essence and so cannot be made pure by tanning.

قال في التبيين : لو جف ولم يستحل أي لم يزل نتنه كما فسره الشلبي لم يطهر ولا فرق في الدابغ بين مسلم وكافر وصبي ومجنون وامرأة إذا حصل المقصود من الدباغة فإن دبغه كافر وغلب على ظنه أنه دبغة بشيء نجس فإنه يغسل ... وفي منية المصلي وشرحها السنجاب إذا خرج من دار الحرب وعلم أنه مدبوغ بودك الميتة لا تجوز به الصلاة مالم يغسل لأنه طهر بالدباغ وتنجس بودك الميتة فيطهر بالغسل والعصر ان أمكن عصره وإلا فيجفف ثلاثا وإن علم أنه مدبوغ بشيء طاهر جازت معه الصلاة وإن لم يغسل وان شك فالأفضل أن يغسل ولو لم يغسل جازت بناء على أن الأصل الطهارة اهـ وفي القنية الجلود التي تدبغ في بلادنا ولا يغسل مذبحها ولا تتوقى النجاسة في دبغها ويلقونها على الأرض النجسة ولا يغسلونها بعد تمام الدبغ فهي طاهرة بجوز إتخاذ الخفاف والمكاعب وغلاف الكتب والمشط والقارة والدلاء منها رطبا أو يابسا اهـ
